Schumer praises Harris platform after Democratic loss

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Vice President Harris' platform will have "strong impacts" on the Democratic Party after it lost both the White House and control of the Senate.

Why it matters: Schumer quickly backed Harris after she became the party's nominee and now he needs to find a way to reclaim a Senate majority.

Schumer is facing a Republican majority of at least 52 seats in the Senate. As of Wednesday night, Democrats were still hoping to hold onto some key undecided races.
If Republicans pick up more than 52 seats, the majority moves further and further away from Schumer in the 2026 midterms. Democrats have limited pick up options in two years.

The big picture: Schumer addressed the fact that he will not be majority leader next year, calling for bipartisanship before the Democrats enter the minority.

"As I've said time and again, in both the majority and the minority, the only way to get things done in the Senate is through bipartisan legislation while maintaining our principles — and the next two years will be no different," Schumer said in the statement.
Senate races in Nevada, Arizona and Pennsylvania had still yet to be decided as of Wednesday evening.
