U.S. elections have never been "more secure," CISA head says

• In a razor-thin election, even the smallest whiff of doubt that votes aren't counted as cast could spur violence and deepen U.S. political divisions.

State of play: Jen Easterly, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told reporters in a media briefing Monday that "our election infrastructure has never been more secure."

• She added that election operators have "never been better prepared to deliver safe, secure, free and fair elections."

Threat level: Foreign adversaries have been flooding social media with fake videos and images over the last few weeks with the hopes of undermining confidence in U.S. democracy.

• On Friday, the intelligence community said a video circulating in Georgia purporting to depict voter fraud was linked to Russia.
• The FBI warned Saturday that two videos pretending to be from the bureau about ballot fraud were also fake.
• Easterly said her office has also seen "small-scale incidents" like distributed denial of service attacks, criminal destruction of ballot drop boxes and severe weather that could disrupt voting. But so far, these have had "no significant impact to election infrastructure," she added.

Between the lines: The 2024 U.S. elections are currently facing an unprecedented amount of foreign disinformation, officials say.

• Expect Russia, China and Iran to keep spreading fake stories about voter fraud, terrorist threats and alleged hacks of voting machines.

The bottom line: State and local election officials will be the best source for accurate information about the voting process and election operations, CISA said.
