1. The trial against the confessed killers of Brazilian activist and Rio de Janeiro council member Marielle Franco started yesterday, six years after her murder.
The state attorney's office is asking for a prison sentence of 84 years for the two former police officers accused of shooting Franco.
Three others — one police chief and two politicians— were arrested earlier this year, accused of masterminding the killing.
Franco was an renowned advocate against police violence and for Afro-Brazilians and housing rights.
2. Sandra Gutiérrez, the Bolivian district attorney in charge of a case against former President Evo Morales, said yesterday she's been receiving anonymous threats over the investigation.
Morales is accused of statutory rape in a case stemming from 2020, which he says is politically motivated to stop him from trying to run in next year's presidential election.
His supporters have been carrying out road blockades, and Morales also accused the current government of shooting at his car last weekend. Authorities say the car had tried to run a police checkpoint and Morales shot first.
