Scoop: TPG to raise sports-focused private equity fund

TPG is in the early stages of raising a sports-focused fund, Axios has learned from multiple sources.

Why it matters: This illustrates how even legacy private equity has caught the sports bug, whether that means buying teams, media rights, real estate, or ancillary services.

The firm declined comment.

Behind the scenes: One of the effort's advisers will be pro golfer Rory McIlroy, who previously worked with TPG on its deal for golf facilities services company Troon.

TPG chairman and founding partner David Bonderman is co-majority owner of the NHL's Seattle Kraken, and a minority owner of the NBA's Boston Celtics.
