Jimmy Carter votes for Kamala Harris weeks after turning 100

Former President Jimmy Carter cast his mail ballot for Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday, weeks after turning 100.

Why it matters: Carter, who has been in hospice care since February 2023, previously told his son, Chip Carter, that he was hoping to live long enough to vote for Harris.

Early voting began in Georgia on Tuesday.

State of play: Chip's wife, Becky Payne, dropped off the former president's ballot on Wednesday, per the AJC.

"He's never voted for a Republican in his life," his son told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Between the lines: Some social media users have falsely claimed that Carter voted in person on Wednesday, sharing videos and photos of the former president in a wheelchair.

The video and images of Carter were taken on his 100th birthday when he celebrated the occasion with his family in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Flashback: The former president's grandson, Jason Carter, said Harris "carries my grandfather's legacy" in August at the Democratic National Convention.

Zoom out: Carter, the longest-living U.S. president, made history this month as the first president to reach triple digits.

President Biden, last month, characterized Carter as "one of the most influential statesmen in our history."
