Amazon to put more electric delivery vehicles on the road

Zoom in: Amazon has committed to buying 100,000 electric delivery vans and putting them on the road by 2030 in the largest ever order of such vehicles, Hurst said.

• There are 24,000 already on those already on the roads, she added.
• In India, where the company is attempting to tackle decarbonization, there are now 7,300 electric delivery vans.

Zoom out: Amazon with other companies launched JOULE (Joint Operation Unifying Last-Mile Electrification) last week, a project to build a new network of shared electric vehicle charging stations in Bengaluru.

• It has also invested $10 million into a public-private partnership with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group to work on medium and heavy road freight in four cities in India and six in Latin America, according to Hurst.
• "It's a little bit of a different part of the transportation logistics supply chain, and we're working on decarbonizing those cities together in conjunction with the mayors and their cities," Hurst said.

What they're saying: "Ideas are great, commitments are great, but action is where it's at," Hurst said.

• "One of the best ways that the private sector can demonstrate action is by making an order [and] sending a demand signal," she said of EVs and renewable energy.
