Teamsters decline to endorse either Harris or Trump

• The Teamsters endorsed President Biden in 2020, but when Biden was still the Democratic presidential nominee this cycle, the union was considering not endorsing either candidate.

Zoom in: Polling released by the union on Wednesday showed Trump with an edge over Harris among Teamsters members.

• An electronic poll found that 59.6% of members support Trump, while 34% support Harris. The poll, which the union said was independently managed by BallotPoint Election Services, launched after President Biden withdrew from the race.
• A phone poll, conducted by Lake Research Partners for the Teamsters, found 58% of members supporting Trump and 31% supporting Harris. The poll was conducted Sept. 9-15, per the union.

What they're saying: "Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business," O'Brien said in a statement.

• "We sought commitments from both Trump and Harris not to interfere in critical union campaigns or core Teamsters industries—and to honor our members' right to strike—but were unable to secure those pledges," O'Brien said.

State of play: O'Brien sought speaking time at both parties' conventions but was snubbed at the Democratic National Convention, despite the leaders of several of the other major labor unions being given slots.

The big picture: The Democratic Party has historically had an edge among labor workers, but Trump has increasingly tried to court these voters.
