Judge outlines maximum penalties for Georgia school shooting suspect and his father

• Colt Gray, the suspected shooter, has been charged as an adult with four counts of felony murder.
• His father, Colin Gray, has been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children.

State of play: Georgia's Barrow County Superior Court Judge Currie Mingledorff presided over both hearings Friday.

• Colt Gray answered a series of questions from the judge but did not enter a plea during the hearing. His lawyer did not request bond for Gray, who is being held in a juvenile detention center.
• Mingledorff initially told the suspected shooter that he could face the death penalty as a result of his actions. He later called Gray back into the court room to clarify that, as a minor, he is not eligible for the death penalty.
• Rather, he could face a maximum sentence of life in prison with or without the possibility of parole.

In a separate hearing shortly afterwards, Mingledorff told Colin Gray that he could face a maximum of 180 years in prison if convicted on all counts. The judge broke down the penalties as follows:

• Each count of felony murder in second degree could carry a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.
• Each count of involuntary manslaughter could bring a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
• Each count of felony cruelty to children could mean up to 10 years in prison.

What to watch: Mingledorff set preliminary hearings for both Colt and Colin Gray for Dec. 4.
