When it came time for each state to cast its vote during the ceremonial roll call at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, each delegation did so to the tune (or tunes) of a special song.
Why it matters: Breaking with the tradition of a cut-and-dry roll call turned the procedure into an exuberant celebration that reflected the energy the Harris-Walz campaign has imbued the Democratic party with.
- The roll call's party atmosphere also offered a stark contrast to the more reserved energy at the RNC's roll call last month.
The big picture: In the weeks leading up to the convention, each state delegation worked with presiding DJ Cassidy to pick a song that evoked a spirit of "unity and celebration" and was meaningful to the state, the New York Times reported.
- Axios has compiled a Spotify playlist of each song played during the proceeding. Notably, Garth Brooks, whose song was featured as Oklahoma cast its vote, is not on Spotify and not included in the playlist.
- The roll call included everything from Stevie Wonder and Tom Petty classics, to modern anthems from Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan.
Zoom in: A standout moment came when the artist Lil Jon performed a mashup of his songs "Turn Down for What" and "Get Low" live on behalf of the Georgia delegation.
- This also included singing "V.P. Harris … Governor Walz" to the rhythm of the refrain "from the window to the walls" in "Get Low."
