Top House Republicans warned members on Thursday that they need to ramp up their fundraising efforts due to the influx of cash Democrats have seen since the Biden-Harris swap, multiple sources told Axios.
Why it matters: Leadership told GOP lawmakers they need to present a unified front, and haul in fundraising, during the final stretch of the election.
- NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) said on a Thursday conference call that the GOP faces a new reality, but they still have a path to picking up seats, a source on the call told Axios.
- Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) — who transferred an additional $4 million to the House GOP campaign arm — stressed on the call he is committed to continuing to cross the country to raise cash and campaign with candidate.
- "Lots of talk about Dem fundraising. And we need to kick it into high gear," one lawmaker told Axios.
Inside the call: Hudson told members: "Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are the most left-wing ticket in history. If we aren't disciplined in repeating that message – we could lose this country. "
- House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) told members that he won't bring divisive bills to the floor in September, saying that they need to have unifying bills upon returning from recess, two sources confirmed.
The big picture: The political climate has dramatically changed since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee, with Republicans looking for new ways to keep their base enthused and sway swing voters.
