Jordan Chiles booted from third-place Olympic spot

U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles was stripped of the third-place spot that earned her a bronze medal for what amounts to four seconds of pause about the difficulty value of her floor routine, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) confirmed on Saturday.

Why it matters: The announcement follows a decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport finding on Saturday that an inquiry the USA team raised Monday, bumping Chiles from fifth place behind two Romanians to third place, was filed 4 seconds after a one-minute cutoff.

The Romanian Gymnastics Federation and gymnasts Sabrina Maneca-Voinea and Ana Maria Bărbosu, now in third with a score of 13.766, filed the application to have USA's inquiry rejected as "untimely" and the U.S. gymnast's score of 13.666 upheld.

The CAS cites "article 8.5 of the 2024 FIG Technical Regulations" in its decision.
"The initial score of 13.666 given to Ms Jordan Chiles in the final of the women's Floor exercise shall be reinstated," the CAS writes.

Zoom in: USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee write in a statement on X that they are "devastated" and believe the inquiry into the difficulty value of Chiles' floor routine "was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring."

"Throughout the appeal process, Jordan has been subject to consistent, utterly baseless and extremely hurtful attacks on social media. No athelete should be subject to such treatment," the entities added.

They condemned the attacks and commended Jordan "for conducting herself with integrity both on and off the competition floor."
