Longtime Reuters M&A journalist Greg Roumeliotis will depart the news agency to join Brunswick Group, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: Roumeliotis is the latest high-profile business editor to depart journalism for a role in financial communications.
Zoom in: In June, Wall Street Journal's veteran deals editor, Dana Cimilluca joined Centerview Partners to lead communications, while Business Insider executive editor Olivia Oran joined Brunswick earlier this year. Oran previously worked with Roumeliotis at Reuters.
Catch up quick: Roumeliotis spent 17 years at Reuters, his most recent title being Corporate Finance and ESG Editor.
- But his main area of focus for more than a decade was covering private equity and M&A for the wire service and serving as both a reporter and editor for its deals team.
- His oversight included coverage of IPOs, private equity, and shareholder activism.
Flashback: Brunswick has a history of hiring M&A reporting vets.
- The firm's U.S. advisory business grew, starting in the early aughts, under Steve Lipin, who previously served as the Wall Street Journal's M&A reporter. He left Brunswick in 2017 to start Gladstone Place Partners.
- Brunswick's CEO of the Americas, Nik Deogun, is also the former editor-in-chief of CNBC and Wall Street Journal M&A reporter.
- According to the firm, Brunswick has supported 155 transactions worth $279.9 billion so far this year — including Paramount-Skydance deal, Endeavor's sale to Silver Lake and BlackRock's acquisition of Global Infrastructure Partners. It's also advised on Starbucks' proxy fight and Reddit's IPO.
Details: Roumeliotis will serve as a director in Brunswick's New York office supporting M&A transactions, shareholder activism defense and IPOs, a source familiar with the hiring told Axios.
- Brunswick and Roumeliotis declined to comment.
