Schumer says Menendez should resign

The big picture: There were already Democrats calling for Menendez's expulsion from the Senate after he was charged with the crimes last year.

• But now the pressure will be overwhelming for Menendez to decide to leave office himself. If not, it is likely his colleagues will have to act to expel him.
• Menendez was found guilty on all counts, including bribery, fraud, acting as a foreign agent and obstruction.

Between the lines: Menendez has filed to run for reelection as an independent in New Jersey, but he has found little support back home.

• Rep. Andy Kim (D-N.J.), who is the Democratic nominee for Senate in the state, also immediately called for Menendez to resign.

• New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) also called on Menendez to resign and said the Senate should expel him if he chooses not to leave office.
• The state's junior senator, Cory Booker, reiterated his call from last autumn for Menendez to step aside.
