ABC News shifts Biden's Stephanopoulos interview to Friday primetime

President Biden's interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos will now air as a primetime special on Friday.

Why it matters: The shift from the previously announced Sunday morning time slot reflects the urgency of the situation as Biden faces growing pressure from some Democrats to abandon his re-election bid in the wake of his lackluster debate performance.

"This story is of national interest, so we are making it a primetime" special to air Friday, the same day the interview is taking place, a network source said.

The big picture: Biden is facing a growing consensus among frustrated congressional Democrats to step aside, Axios' Andrew Solender reports.

The president and his aides have attributed his June 27 debate performance to factors including a cold and jet lag from two foreign travel trips earlier in the month.
Representatives for Biden did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

State of play: The first clip of Biden's interview will air on "World News Tonight With David Muir" Friday evening and then it will be broadcast in its entirety from 8pm ET, per an ABC News statement.

"The president will sit down in Wisconsin on the campaign trail earlier on Friday with the 'Good Morning America' co-anchor and 'This Week' anchor George Stephanopoulos," the statement said.

The interview will air again in its entirety on "This Week With George Stephanopoulos," on Sunday, according to the network.
