Scoop: Johnson, NRCC chair to meet with Trump

House Speaker Mike Johnson behind a podium

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) are slated to meet with former President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort on June 17, two sources familiar with their plans told Axios.

Why it matters: House Republicans are working with a razor-thin majority and face an uphill climb to retain control of the chamber next year.

  • The meeting comes as several a House Republican incumbents have faced — or are about to face — bitter primary battles.
  • Trump has held off on attacking many House GOP incumbents who have been critical of him in the past this far in the cycle to try to avoid weakening Republicans in the chamber.

Of note: Trump is slated to meet with GOP senators on Thursday. Johnson is also expected to be in attendance.

The big picture: Trump has been a kingmaker in some House races in the past.

  • In the 2022 elections, though, 11 House candidates and four Senate candidates he endorsed wound up losing. Many were on the far right of the Republican Party.
