Stock your kitchen like a Blue Zoner

Dan Buettner, the founder of Blue Zones, says you can optimize your home kitchen with longevity in mind.

Why it matters: Your pantry may have more processed, sugary foods than you realize.

  • For example, fruit-flavored yogurt can pack more sugar than a bag of candy.

Here's what Buettner recommends in his 7-Day Longevity Reset:

Always have these:

  • A bowl of fruit full of your favorites.
  • Beans.
  • Sweet potatoes.
  • Nuts.

Never buy these:

  • Sugary drinks.
  • Salty snacks, like chips.
  • Processed meats.
  • Pre-packaged sweets.

The intrigue: Despite research suggesting no amount of alcohol is healthy, Buettner says he's got a wine cellar at home — and he's encountered 90-year-olds in Blue Zones who consume red wine daily.

  • "I love wine," he said. "I don't drink hard liquor anymore and I'll have the very occasional beer. But I'm a big fan of high-quality wines. Instead of drinking a lot of them, I drink a little bit."
