New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a Republican, announced Tuesday that he would seek re-election.

Why it matters: Republicans had hoped Sununu would challenge Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan in 2022 as they fight to regain control of the Senate.

What he's saying: "My responsibility is not to the gridlock and politics of Washington. It's to the citizens of New Hampshire, and I'd rather push myself 120 miles an hour delivering wins for New Hampshire than to slow down and end up on Capitol Hill debating partisan politics without results," Sununu said at a press conference on Tuesday.

  • "Our governor must be accountable and deliver results. It's what I've done and how I can best serve New Hampshire and defend its values," Sununu added.
