Former President George W. Bush will appear as a guest of honor at a fundraiser for Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) next month, Politico first reported.

Why it matters: Bush's presence at the event offers Cheney support from a prominent Republican just weeks after former President Trump endorsed Harriet Hageman, Cheney's challenger in the Wyoming House primary contest.

The big picture: The event will be held on Oct. 18 in Dallas. Other guests include Karl Rove and Kay Bailey Hutchison, the ambassador to NATO in the Trump administration.

  • The divisions between the pro-Trump GOP and Cheney have been rife due to Cheney's outspoken criticism of Trump.
  • House Republicans ousted Cheney as their third-highest ranking member in May after months of backlash over her criticism of Trump and his unfounded claims of election fraud.
  • Cheney is also vice chair of the House's Jan. 6 select committee, which has been a target of Republican criticism.
