Vice President Harris will campaign for California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday in the Bay Area after canceling last month because of a terrorist attack in Afghanistan killed 13 American service members.
Details: The former senator from California — and state's attorney general — will attempt to boost Democratic turnout ahead of the recall election on Sept. 14. It's the second time in California history that a gubernatorial recall campaign has succeeded in getting on the ballot.
- Harris' support in the campaign would be a "significant step" from Democratic Party leaders to aid Newsom in the recall fight, per the San Fransisco Chronicle. The White House has previously expressed its support for the Democratic incumbent.
- Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is campaigning on Saturday with Newsom in Los Angeles, CNN reported.
- The effort to recall Newsom began after he was photographed last year at a dinner in Napa County as coronavirus cases surged and the state government restricted social gatherings.
What's next: Newsom has said that President Biden would also travel to California ahead of the recall vote.
- White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Aug. 25: “I don’t have a date for you at this point in time, but that is still certainly his plan.”
