70% of adults in the U.S. have gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Monday, according to the White House COVID-19 data director.
Why it matters: President Biden had originally wanted to reach the 70% goal by July 4 but fell short by a few weeks. However, the seven-day average of administered doses is now at its highest since early July amid a new surge in cases due to the Delta variant.
The big picture: The Biden administration released new initiatives recently aimed at getting more people vaccinated.
- The president has mandated vaccines or regular testing for federal workers, including military members.
- Some cities are offering cash rewards to people who get vaccinated.
