Education secretary: All schools expected to be fully in-person this fall

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona told MSNBC on Thursday he expects "all schools to be open full-time in-person for all students" by September.

Driving the news: A survey released Thursday by the Department of Education suggests Biden has met his goal of having "most" elementary and middle open for full-time in-person learning by the end of his first 100 days in office, according to AP.

• 54% of schools up to the high school level are offering full-time classroom instruction, up from 46% in January. Nearly 40% are still holding all classes remotely, while 2 in 10 are using a hybrid model.
• "Until we're at 100%, we must keep our foot on the gas pedal," Cardona said Thursday, adding that he'd prefer to have all schools open this spring.

The big picture: The CDC has advised that schools can conduct some form of in-person learning, even with various levels of community spread. It recently updated the guidelines to advise students to social distance at least three feet from one another, as opposed to six.
