Charted: Pandemic internship slump continues

Internships are one "area of the job market that’s still ailing," new data from job listing site Indeed shows.
- The share of internship postings is down 15% from 2020 — and 39% from 2019.
One reason: "[C]ompanies are still recovering from the economic damage of the past 13 months. ... From an employer’s perspective, internships provide temporary help and a potential pipeline for future hires but are rarely critical to day-to-day operations," Indeed's AnnElizabeth Konkel said in a release.
- Yes, but: Internships are "career launching pads for young people."
On the flip side: The share of internship-related searches earlier this month (when searches typically peak) is up 38% from 2020, though still 8.3% lower than 2019.
What to watch: Remote internship opportunities are rising, but overall internship postings haven't bounced back.
