Zuzana Caputova defeated Slovakia's populist governing party, Smer-SD, to become the country's first female president Saturday night.
Details: Maros Sefcovic, vice president the EU’s European Commission, conceded defeat to his political novice rival after the liberal lawyer won 58% of the vote. Caputova ran on an anti-corruption campaign. "It is possible not to succumb to populism, to tell the truth, to raise interest without aggressive vocabulary," the pro-EU environmental activist said, according to Reuters.
