Virginia attorney general calls on Ralph Northam to resign
- Zachary Basu, author of Axios Sneak Peek
Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring issued a statement Saturday calling for Gov. Ralph Northam to resign over the racist yearbook photo scandal.
"It is no longer possible for Governor Ralph Northam to lead our Commonwealth and it is time for him to step down. I have spoken with Lieutenant Governor Fairfax and reassured him that, should he ascend to the governorship, he will have my complete support and commitment to ensuring his success and the success of our Commonwealth."
Why it matters: Herring, who will be a candidate for Virginia governor in 2021, was one of the state's last remaining high-profile Democrats not to call for Northam's resignation. Sen. Tim Kaine, Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Bobby Scott joined him in asking Northam to step down later Saturday afternoon.
