At least 429 people are dead and 1,400 injured after an eruption on Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano triggered a tsunami this weekend, causing mass devastation on the islands of Java and Sumatra, the AP reports.

The big picture: Residents have been told to stay away from the coast, as the seething volcano could still cause another tsunami. A mix of ash, steam and other materials is rising thousands of feet into the air above the crater, creating its own lightning and apocalyptic visuals in the surrounding area.
