Five days after taking the job, interim president of USA Gymnastics Mary Bono resigned Tuesday, the New York Times reports, after she was criticized for her opposition of Nike's decision to back Colin Kaepernick despite his lead in protests against racial inequality in the United States by kneeling for the National Anthem.

The big picture: When Bono took the position last week, Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles resurfaced a photo Bono posted of herself using a marker to black out the Nike logo on golf cleats. She was also criticized for taking the position due to her former role as a lobbyist for the law firm representing USA Gymnastics when the Nassar scandal broke, Faegre Baker Daniels.
