While the overall violent crime rate fell in 2017 after two years of increases, the number of reported rapes per 100,000 people reached the highest level in a decade, according to FBI data.
The big picture: Rape incidents increased under both the FBI's old definition of rape, which includes only crimes in which women were victims, as well as the newer, broader definition, which includes victims of all genders. Richard Myer, executive director of Major Cities Chiefs Association, told the Wall Street Journal that the #MeToo movement has played a role in encouraging victims to report incidents. However, more than two thirds of rapes still go unreported, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN).
