The first medal won at the 2018 Winter Olympics

Charlotte Kalla of Sweden won the first medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, taking home the gold in cross-country skiing during the 7.5 km + 7.5km skiathlon event, per Yahoo.

The Netherlands has the most medals after the first official day of the Games — and the United States has yet to reach the podium.

The Netherlands' early successes, propelled by their speed-skating teams:

  • Gold (1): women's 3,000-meter speed-skating
  • Silver (2): women's 3,000-meter speed-skating; men's 1,500-meter short track speed-skating
  • Bronze (1): women's 3,000-meter speed-skating

Notable: Japanese ski jumper Noriaki Kasai set a record for the athlete with most appearances at the Winter Olympics. He has competed at eight straight Winter Games, stretching back to 1992 in Albertville, France.
