Per comScore's latest digital trends report, 1 in 5 minutes spent online are on social media, which is far more than any other digital function (search, instant messaging, video) on mobile. For context, U.S. adults spend more than 6x more time with social media than email on their smartphones. The study also finds that smartphone apps account for 60% of all social media time spent. By comparison, only 8% of social media engagement is spent in mobile web.
