The conservative House Freedom Caucus has a plan to force a repeal-only vote on the Affordable Care Act to the House floor by September — a move that would likely leave a lot of their Republican colleagues in the lurch, per Politico.
Their plan: The Freedom Caucus wants to circulate a "discharge petition," allowing them to circumvent party leadership to force a vote. The petition would require the signatures of half of the members of the House to succeed.
Why it matters: The plan is unlikely to work, but it might identify at least some GOP members who have backed away from a repeal-only plan based on their refusal to sign. And that's a move that could put some current members at risk with the Republican base.
