FDA reorganizes food and medical inspections

The Food and Drug Administration will restructure the oversight of its food and medical inspection processes as new commissioner Scott Gottlieb takes the reins, per Bloomberg.

The change: Previously, the FDA's Office of Regulatory Affairs operated an umbrella of five geographical region heads — now, it'll have six product-specific offices instead: pharmaceutical quality, medical devices, tobacco, food, biologic drugs, and research.

Why it matters: It's a modernizing move for the FDA, and one that got the approval of Gottlieb's predecessor:
