FBI tracked fake news social media accounts tied to Russia on Election Day

- Sara Fischer, author ofAxios Media Trends
The FBI monitored social media sites on Election Day to observe accounts that could spread false or misleading information, CNN reports. They identified certain accounts, some overseas, that were supposedly behind the distribution of a Russian disinformation campaign.
Why it matters: The report underscores the current investigation by FBI special counsel Robert Mueller into the Russian meddling of the 2016 election. It also reaffirms the recent testimony of former HHS Sec. Jeh Johnson, in which he said that the Obama Administration knew about Russian attempts to meddle with the Election last year.
