Dr. Francis Collins will keep his job as head of the National Institutes of Health, the White House announced tonight. The decision makes Collins a rare holdover from the Obama administration. Collins has served as NIH director since 2009.
Why it matters: It's not a big surprise — Collins had indicated he wanted to stay on, and although President Trump also considered Republican Rep. Andy Harris for the job, he eventually warmed to Collins — but the decision will give the NIH stability at a time when it's trying to convince Congress to reject the deep budget cuts Trump has proposed.
