Mike Pompeo says he intends to reinvigorate the State Department, and help get “back our swagger.”
Why it matters: Morale has been low at State so far in the Trump administration, with budgets slashed and top positions left unfilled under Rex Tillerson. In his fifth day on the job and his first time stepping foot in the State Department since being confirmed, Pompeo addressed department employees and emphasized the critical importance of their work around the world. Some in the department think Pompeo's arrival will restore State's prestige, since the former CIA Director has President Trump's ear.
