United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby tells "Axios on HBO" that America could be headed toward a pilot shortage, because "the military produces far fewer pilots today than they did ... in the Cold War era."

Why it matters: The U.S. travel industry is roaring back, with leisure air travel exceeding pre-pandemic levels, and now must protect itself from future disruptions.

  • United recently launched a program called Aviate Academy, which is designed to train new pilots.
  • It committed that 50% of each class will include women or people of color, two demographics that are underrepresented in today's commercial cockpits.

United Airlines says 97% of U.S. employees fully vaccinated against COVID-19

United Airlines said Wednesday that over 97% of its U.S.-based employees are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to a company memo obtained by Axios.

Why it matters: United announced in August that it would require its 67,000 U.S.-based employees to get vaccinated by Sept. 27 or face termination. It's one of several airlines that set vaccine requirements even before President Biden issued his own vaccine mandate for employers with over 100 workers.

Angela Merkel's departure from German government may result in a massive influx of private investment.

Driving the news: The center-left Social Democratic Party, led by chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz, clinched a narrow victory in Germany's federal elections. It now will seek to form a coalition government by year-end with the Greens and the Free Democrats.
