Sen. Martha McSally says she was raped while serving in the military
Sen. Martha McSally said Wednesday during a hearing of a subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee that she was raped by a superior officer while she served in the U.S. Air Force.
Why it matters: McSally — who served for over 2 decades in the Air Force and was the first female fighter pilot to fly in combat — said she saw leaders mishandle prevention and investigation of reports of sexual assault in the Air Force. Her lack of trust in the system is the reason she did not report. McSally has also previously said her high school track coach sexually abused her for years.
