1 big thing: Tech policy job news
Hill moves
- Emily Benavides is now chief of staff to Rep. Bob Latta. She most recently founded Benavides Strategies and previously worked for Sen. Rob Portman.
- Mariah Baker will join as a senior policy adviser for Rep. Suzan DelBene. She most recently was a policy advisor at the Special Committee on Aging.
- Philip Murphy is now with the Senate Commerce Committee as senior professional staff. He was formerly the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy assistant director for spectrum and telecom policy.
- Arturo Gutierrez has a new position as press secretary for Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, per Leadership Connect. He was recently press secretary/digital director for Rep. Daniel Goldman.
- Noah Sadlier is now communications director for Sen. Pete Ricketts. He was previously comms director for Rep. John James.
- Ruby Robles is now Sen. Adam Schiff's press secretary. She previously was a Treasury spokesperson and worked in Sen. Elizabeth Warren's office.
- Benjamin Easter is now a legislative assistant in Sen. Ted Budd's office, per Leadership Connect. He previously was a legislative correspondent for Sen. Mike Crapo.
Administration moves
- The FTC has named Jake Denton as its chief technology officer. Denton graduated from American University in 2021 and previously worked as a research associate for the Heritage Foundation.
- FTC chair Andrew Ferguson has appointed David Shaw as principal deputy director and Kelse Moen as deputy director of the agency's Bureau of Competition. He also tapped Douglas Geho as deputy director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. Shaw served in the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division during the first Trump administration and Moen most recently served as senior counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee for Sen. Lindsey Graham. Geho was an attorney adviser to commissioner Melissa Holyoak.
- FCC commissioner Nathan Simington has announced that he's appointed David Brodian to serve as senior legal adviser, and Sara Rahmjoo to serve as legal adviser. Brodian was previously an attorney adviser in the competition policy division of the Wireline Competition Bureau, and Rahmjoo was Simington's policy adviser and confidential assistant.
- FCC chair Brendan Carr has named Bradley Craigmyle as deputy general counsel of the FCC. He joins from the House of Representatives Office of General Counsel, where he served as associate general counsel.
Industry and lobbying moves
- Zest AI has announced Esther Kahng as head of public policy and chief of staff. Kahng spent over a decade on the Hill and most recently served as chief counsel to the House Financial Services Committee.
- Cohere has announced David Ferris is the new head of global public sector. He was recently with Blackbird.AI.
- NCTA – The Internet & Television Association CEO Michael Powell has announced that he'll retire later this year.
- Jack Miller has joined the Chamber of Progress as senior director of communications. He previously served as OPM director of communications.
- Mike Daniels will lead Databricks' public sector practice. Prior to this position, he held public sector sales positions at Google, Salesforce, Oracle, and UiPath.
- Wiley has announced that Alexandrine De Bianchi has joined the firm as a public policy advisor in the telecom, media & technology practice. Previously, De Bianchi was the director of legislative affairs at OSTP.
- Janae Washington is now the senior director of communications at ITI. She was most recently ITI's director of communications.
- SIIA has announced the appointment of Joshua Stein as technology policy analyst. Stein was a postdoctoral fellow at the Georgetown Institute for the Study of Markets and Ethics.
- Douglas Farrar has joined Brunswick's D.C. office. He was mostly recently former FTC chair Lina Khan's director of public affairs.
Nonprofit and think tank moves
- Cato has announced that Matthew Mittelsteadt is joining its technology policy team with a focus on cybersecurity and AI policy. He was recently a research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.
