1 big thing: Tech policy job news
Hill moves
- Sen.-elect Dave McCormick has tapped Mark Isakowitz to be his chief of staff. Isakowitz was most recently Google's vice president of government affairs and public policy for the U.S. and Canada, and is a Senate GOP veteran.
- Darin Miller is now chief of staff for Sen. Cynthia Lummis. He was most recently communications director for Sen. Ted Cruz and is a Lummis office alum.
- Lauren Ziegler has a new position as chief of staff for Rep. Brian Babin, per Leadership Connect.
- Abigail Goldring is now deputy communications director for Sen. Ed Markey, per Leadership Connect. She was previously Markey's press secretary.
- Kate Roberts will be joining incoming-Rep. Julie Fedorchak as senior communications advisor. She was most recently digital director and senior communications advisor at the House Energy and Commerce Committee with Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers.
- Incoming House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Brett Guthrie has announced that Megan Jackson will serve as the staff director and Sophie Khanahmadi will serve as deputy staff director. Jackson is Guthrie's former LD who has recently been working for biopharmaceutical company ​​Alkermes, and Khanahmadi was previously chief of staff in Guthrie's office.
- Guthrie has also shared additional E&C senior staff news: Joel Miller will serve as chief counsel, Jessica Donlon as general counsel, Chris Sarley as senior advisor and director of member services and stakeholder engagement, and Matt VanHyfte as comms director. They're all Capitol Hill veterans.
Administration moves
- President-elect Trump has tapped Jacob Helberg to be under secretary of State for economic growth, energy, and the environment at the State Department. He is an adviser to Palantir and the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.
- Trump has named commissioner Andrew Ferguson to be the chair of the Federal Trade Commission, and is nominating Mark Meador, a former staffer to Sen. Mike Lee, to be a commissioner.
- Michael Kratsios is Trump's pick to be OSTP director, a Senate-confirmed position. Formerly the managing director at Scale AI, Kratsios has been helping to lead tech policy during the transition and served as chief technology officer during Trump's first term.
- Lynne Parker will serve as executive director of the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology (PCAST). She recently announced her retirement from the University of Tennessee, and was deputy CTO in Trump's first term.
- Sriram Krishnan will serve as senior policy adviser for AI at OSTP, and started his career at Microsoft as a founding member of Windows Azure.
- UC Berkeley's David Evan Harris is now a member of the AI Safety Institute Consortium at NIST.
Industry and lobbying moves
- TikTok has added Noel Francisco, who served as solicitor general during President-elect Trump's first administration, and his partner Hashim Mooppan at law firm Jones Day, to its legal defense, per Reuters.
- CTIA CEO Meredith Attwell Baker has announced that she is retiring from the wireless industry association. She has served as the head since 2014.
- Nick Clegg is leaving his role as Meta policy chief and will be replaced by deputy Joel Kaplan, a prominent figure in Republican circles.
Nonprofit and think tank moves
- The Roosevelt Institute has named Elizabeth Wilkins as its next president and CEO. Wilkins previously served as director of policy planning and chief of staff to FTC chair Lina Khan.
- The Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition has announced that its executive director John Windhausen will step down after 15 years. A new executive director is expected to be in place by March 3.
- Ryan Fedasiuk is now director of U.S. AI governance at The Future Society. He was previously at the State Department, where he helped launch the Office of China Coordination.
