The Senate confirmed Michael Kratsios to lead the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy by a 74-25 vote on Tuesday.
Why it matters: As OSTP director, Kratsios will be in charge of the country's science and technology policy agenda and serve as a key adviser to President Trump on tech issues.
- He'll also work closely with AI and crypto czar David Sacks on regulation and policy.
Flashback: At his nominations hearing last month, Kratsios told senators it's "common sense" to evaluate agencies for possible DOGE cuts.
- He deferred to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick when asked to make commitments to honor existing CHIPS and Science Act agreements.
Catch up quick: Kratsios, managing director at Scale AI, was chief technology officer during President Trump's first term and comes from tech billionaire Peter Thiel's world.
What's next: Kratsios is joining an office with a looming deadline to come out with an AI "action plan."
- The administration has until mid-July to develop and submit the AI "action plan" called for in Trump's executive order.
