Rep. Ted Lieu at today's Axios event on AI's impact in the workplace sat down with Ashley to discuss what's next for AI safety.
Here are some of the key quotes from Ashley's discussion with Lieu.
On AI safety: "We can have America lead the world in AI innovation and at the same time have it be responsible innovation that is safe."
- "If Congress says look, we're going to fund the AI Safety Institute and we want you to execute it, then the executive branch has to execute it. Now, that is all caught up in a much larger debate of what's going to happen on March 14."
On the House AI task force: "We all signed onto a bipartisan report that sets forth a lot of recommendations for how we think we should have responsible AI innovation."
- "Hopefully we can implement some of those recommendations this term."
On his personal use of AI: "I pay for subscriptions for ChatGPT and Gemini ... Sometimes I'll have a speech and I'll upload it and I'll say, 'Make it sound more interesting or make it funnier or make it more captivating.' And I don't take all of the recommendations, but I'll take some of them."
What they're saying: At a separate event today organized by NAHJ's D.C. chapter, Maria asked House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for some insights into House Democrats' approach to AI policy.
- Jeffries said Lieu will continue to lead the effort for House Dems.
- Lieu will make sure "that we can get the benefits of artificial intelligence, including as it relates to health care and medical breakthroughs, while ensuring that we put into place legislative guardrails to stop bad actors from manipulating artificial intelligence to benefit their pocketbooks and or to damage the American people," Jeffries said.
