President-elect Trump on Sunday night named Brendan Carr to be chair of the Federal Communications Commission.
The big picture: Carr, who now serves as the top Republican on the commission and was first appointed by Trump in 2017, wrote the FCC chapter of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025.
- Carr has called on Big Tech to pay into the Universal Service Fund, expressed support for a ban on TikTok and believes Section 230 liability protections for tech companies should be rolled back.
What they're saying: "Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech, and has fought against the regulatory Lawfare that has stifled Americans' Freedoms, and held back our Economy," Trump said in a Sunday night statement.
- "He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America's Job Creators and Innovators, and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America."
What we're watching: As FCC chair, Carr could open up federal funding for Elon Musk's Starlink satellite company.
- Carr may also abandon his position to ban TikTok given Trump has expressed support for keeping the app.
