The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday will vote on KOSA, COPPA and several other tech bills.
State of play: The markup announcement notably did not include E&C Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers' American Privacy Rights Act, but Ranking Member Frank Pallone plans to introduce it as an amendment to COPPA 2.0.
- The amendment excludes civil rights provisions advocacy groups had been pushing for.
- The Senate passed the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act, a combined package of the legislation, in July.
The Sept. 18 markup will include:
- The Kids Online Safety Act
- The Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act
- The Telehealth Modernization Act
- The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act
Our thought bubble: It's been a long, uphill battle for kids online protection measures, particularly KOSA, and a committee vote signals crucial support from both sides of the aisle and leadership.
- If the bills become law it will be the first time in decades that tech companies will face a greater legal onus to shield young users from harmful content and protect their privacy.
