The House Science Committee advanced nine bipartisan AI bills Wednesday, including the CREATE AI Act to authorize the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource.
Why it matters: The markup signals that lawmakers are angling to move on AI policy this year.
Context: NAIRR has been operating as a pilot project since January, and it's meant to increase competition and ensure AI is being developed responsibly.
- The NSF-led pilot will last two years and provide computing power, data, software and training to researchers.
- The bipartisan, bicameral CREATE AI Act would establish NAIRR in law.
The AI bills that House Science also approved include:
- The NSF AI Education Act, which would support the agency's education and professional development programs.
- The Small Business Artificial Intelligence Advancement Act, which would require the director of NIST to develop resources for small businesses.
- The Workforce for AI Trust Act, which would leverage existing programs at NSF and NIST to try to fill the gap in the AI governance workforce.
- The LIFT AI Act, which would authorize NSF to make awards aimed at improving K-12 AI literacy.
What's next: The committee favorably reported the nine bills to the House.
- The CREATE AI Act is now ready for floor action in both chambers. The Senate Commerce Committee approved the bill on July 31.
