The FCC's reclassification of broadband under Title II has been delayed until August, a federal court ordered Friday.
Why it matters: Democratic FCC commissioners say treating internet companies like an essential service is necessary to ensure consumers have an open and fair internet.
Driving the news: The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that more time is needed to consider the merits of the telecom industry's request to stay the FCC order, which was set to take effect July 22.
- The rules are now on hold until Aug. 5.
- The FCC voted to reclassify broadband in April.
What's next: Parties have to provide new briefs by July 19 explaining how they think the Brand X case impacts this one.
- In Brand X, the Supreme Court ruled the FCC's regulatory decisions for internet companies can be made using the Chevron deference, which was overturned last month.
