Stripe's acquisition of OpenRouter will move it closer to AI purchase decisions, creating potential tensions between the payments company and the model providers it serves.

Why it matters: Stripe's role will expand from handling the transaction after a customer picks a model to owning technology that can influence that choice.

How it works: OpenRouter's Auto Router can select a model for a customer's prompt. Its provider router then chooses where to serve that request, prioritizing price and uptime.

Customers can override OpenRouter's defaults, but the company sets them, influencing who gets the demand and the token revenue that follows.

Context: Stripe says it provides revenue infrastructure to thousands of AI companies, including 88% of the 2026 Forbes AI 50.

OpenRouter gives more than 5 million developers access to hundreds of models through a single interface.
