Government's role in overseeing how GLP-1 copycats are compounded took center stage at an Axios-hosted conversation on Wednesday.

Why it matters: Legislators are eyeing more strict commercial compounding oversight as the FDA continues to navigate how to approach the slew of companies offering cheaper, compounded copycats.

Catch up quick: When GLP-1 drugs were in short supply, many third parties offered cheaper, compounded versions to patients that remain available today.

In February, the FDA announced its intent "to take decisive steps" to restrict GLP-1 active pharmaceutical ingredients intended for use in non-FDA-approved compounded drugs.

Zoom in: Legislators are mulling bills in both the House and Senate that would increase oversight of drug compounding and impose certain registration and reporting requirements. 

"The reality is this is not a pricing bill, this is a safety[-focused] bill," Rep. Rudy Yakym (R-Ind.) said during an Axios live interview.

Yakym sponsored the House version, which has bipartisan support.

What they're saying: Affordability is at the heart of the compounding issue, says Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-Ill.). 

"If you can save even maybe $20 with a compounded pharmaceutical drug that mimics, or is really a knockoff of the real deal, people are going to look to that option."

National Center for Weight and Wellness director Scott Kahan says it is important to expand access to treatment without dumbing it down. He also emphasized that compounded drugs don't always save patients money and come with their own safety risks.

What's next: Yakym says the Senate's version is headed for markup.

What we're watching: What regulations GLP-1 compounders will face and whether companies can continue to sell compounded treatments as FDA-approved drugs are no longer in short supply.

The FDA is also navigating questions on the subsector.
