Coral, a health care automation platform, raised a $12.5 million seed round, CEO Ajay Shrihari tells Axios exclusively.

The big picture: AI tools that reduce administrative burden are gaining traction as financial and staffing pressures intensify.

Follow the money: The New York City-based company's round was led by Lightspeed and Z47. 

How it works: Coral connects to existing systems like EHRs and payer portals, using AI to turn faxed health care documents into structured data that automates administrative workflows.

It handles patient intake, prior authorization and communications for specialty providers like infusion centers and radiology practices.

Between the lines: "People have been trying to kill the fax machine for 20 years," Shrihari says. "We are keeping it. We will meet you where you're at."

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said in March it plans to start phasing out fax machines and paper mailing for health care claims documentation. 

By the numbers: Half of health care leaders have implemented AI, and more than 80% have deployed initial use cases to end users, according to McKinsey. Administrative efficiency remains the most cited opportunity.

What we're watching: Shrihari says Coral doubled its revenue this month and has goals to reach 40-50 million patients by year-end.

"Fundamentally, we are a robotic process automation company," he says. "For now, we'll solve the health care problem, but it's very much applicable across the stack."
