Joyful Health, a financial infrastructure startup helping health care providers recover revenue, raised a $17 million Series A led by CRV, CEO Eliana Berger tells Axios Pro exclusively.

The big picture: Revenue cycle management technology is having a moment as providers face margin pressure and staffing shortages.

Many startups promise RCM automation, but Joyful is positioning itself as foundational infrastructure — a system of record, not just a workflow tool.

Follow the money: Existing investors XYZ Venture Capital, Designer Fund, Inflect Capital, and Go Global Ventures joined, bringing the total capital raised to $22 million.

How it works: NYC-based Joyful connects disparate systems — EHRs, billing platforms, clearinghouses, payer portals, and bank data — into a single "source of truth."

Its AI then tracks each claim end-to-end, flags where payments break down, and helps recover missing revenue.

The company pairs software with human revenue cycle experts to execute recoveries.

Flashback: Berger was inspired to start Joyful after watching her mother and grandmother — who ran a therapy practice as she was growing up — struggle to deal with administrative tasks related to accepting insurance on nights and weekends.

That background gives Joyful an edge against incumbents like Anthropic and OpenAI, even if they were to make an acquisition in the space, CRV general partner Murat Bicer tells Axios Pro.

"It requires very specialized knowledge in terms of understanding these customers' workflows. And none of the data is publicly available in a way an LLM can learn," Bicer adds.

What they're saying: After spending time studying and working at other clinics in recent years, Berger realized "the reason no one could track their revenue [successfully] was because there's no financial source of truth."

"All that financial data is fragmented and scattered across 12 systems that don't talk to each other," Berger adds.

"AI can look at this data at scale across these various systems and make sense of it," says CRV's Bicer. "We've always had software that can look at this data. But reasoning, making sense of it — that's a new thing."

Reality check: Providers already use a patchwork of RCM vendors — integrating deeply enough to become the "system of record" is a heavy lift.

Proving ROI beyond early adopters will be key, especially in a crowded RCM tech market.
