Scribe startup Nabla has a new hedge against better-funded rival Abridge: partnering with Advanced Machine Intelligence, the $3.5 billion research outfit founded by ex-Meta AI star Yann LeCun

Why it matters: As the space quickly commodifies, AMI and Nabla want to push AI scribes from copilots to full automation, Nabla executive and new AMI CEO Alex LeBrun tells Axios Pro.

The big picture: A new bar is emerging for investment. Simple point solutions won't cut it — they must either transform or eliminate an entire workflow.

Catch up quick: LeBrun, formerly CEO of Nabla, was chosen for the top job at AMI last month. AMI is currently fundraising, LeBrun confirmed to Axios Pro, though he declined to share more details.

Zoom in: Initially, the companies will partner to deepen Nabla's existing use cases in health care, where it currently works on patient visit transcription, summaries, and pre-chart planning.

"For what we do today, to address that last 3% of accuracy, we need a different breed of model," says LeBrun.

LLMs today "are doing 1% of what we could do," says LeBrun, who adds that he sees AI being used to design long-term treatment plans and do direct engagement with patients.

Meanwhile, Nabla is on the hunt for a new CEO, he says. 

Inside the room: LeBrun says he joined AMI to work on health care-focused world models — which he foresees assisting, then supplanting — LLMs by avoiding dangerous hallucinations.

While LLMs can only draw data from text, world models allow machines to come up with predictive representations of how the world works: planning, reasoning, and understanding cause and effect. 

"We trained LLMs using the internet — but all the companies now have the same training datasets, and most of the new content published on the internet is published by AI," says LeBrun. "We need a different source."

What he's saying: World models are "like phase two" for AI in health care, LeBrun says.

Going forward, Nabla's key edge against rivals like Abridge and Ambience will be its use of such models. 

"Our differentiator will be early access to new technology," says LeBrun.

What's next: LeBrun says he foresees introducing a new AMI-powered health care product within the next year.

"The first application will complement some of Nabla's existing health care products," he adds. "It will fill in the remaining space where LLMs are reaching a plateau."
