Imagine Pediatrics raised a $67 million Series B led by existing backers Oak HC/FT, Optum Ventures and Rubicon Founders, CEO George Boghos tells Axios exclusively.

Why it matters: As pediatric value-based care gains traction, health plans are seeking solutions to boost home care and curb hospital visits.

Follow the money: The Autism Impact Fund joined as a new strategic backer.

Funds will power Imagine Pediatric's national expansion as well as improvements in tech-driven care personalization.

Boghos tells Axios that Imagine is cash-flow positive on a per-member basis.

The funding gives the company roughly two years of runway, he says.

How it works: Nashville-based Imagine Pediatrics deploys multidisciplinary teams including physicians, social workers and behavioral health specialists.

Imagine Pediatrics partners with Medicaid and commercial health plans and managed care organizations (MCOs) and identifies potential patients by sifting claims data for evidence of chronic conditions.

When costs decrease by way of its in-home and virtual offering, Imagine Pediatrics shares the savings with those organizations as part of value-based care (VBC) frameworks.

While VBC can be a hard thing to execute, "high-cost populations [can] really prove it in a way that makes economic sense for everyone," says Oak HC/FT managing partner Annie Lamont.

Imagine Pediatrics also employs all of its care team, as opposed to contracting with them, per Boghos.

What they're saying: "The idea is building really deep trust with these families who honestly have had their trust broken by a fragmented system," says Boghos. 

For example, "you should know that this is your nurse, and this is your doctor," he adds.

Autism Impact Fund managing partner Chris Male believes strongly in Imagine Pediatric's employee model. "If you look at solving this problem at scale long term, we believe that's the best way to do it," he says.

The big picture: One in five U.S. children has a special health care need, and they account for nearly half of all pediatric health care spending.

By the numbers: Imagine Pediatrics has served roughly 40,000 children to date since its first appointment in 2023.

The company is operational in three geographic regions: Texas, Florida, and the District of Columbia.

The intrigue: Imagine Pediatric's patient population is diverse — spanning children with a wide range of conditions, including asthma, autism, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy.

That could be a challenge for maintaining quality while ensuring every kid's needs are met, but Boghos says that's where the company's tech comes in. 

Imagine crunches data from health care claims, hospitals, and pharmacies to "build a full picture of each of our kids," per Boghos.

The bottom line: "We've got a very sophisticated data model [that can] truly personalize the care journey for each child," Boghos adds.
